Sickle cell disease (SCD) as we know it presents with a particular subset of symptoms, chronic pain being the most pressing. The basis of SCD is misshaped red blood cells that lead to vessel occlusion, ultimately resulting in pain, cardiovascular issues and increased risk for infections. As of now, opioids have been the go-to drugs for mitigating chronic pain symptoms described by SCD patients. However, recent literature published in JAMA suggests that medical cannabis may be the secret to reducing chronic pain and subsequently elevating moods of sickle cell disease patients.
The team at drritam.com is rooting for our SCD patients and a brighter tomorrow!
